Frequently asked questions
Here we have collected some questions from students to the Folk High School - and some answers. Please look here, if you have some questions before you ask us. If you still haven't got the answer, feel free to ask...
Q: How do I get to Hadsten Folk High School? A: Take the train from Aarhus. It takes 25 minutes. The train line is Copenhagen to Aalborg, Copenhagen to Frederikshavn or Copenhagen to Lindholm. It runs every hour. From Copenhagen the train ride takes 3-4 hours. Or take the bus from Aarhus. Line 115 or line 117 will take you to Hadsten. It takes about 45 minutes. Or go by plane to Aarhus Airport.
Q: Will there be a pick up in Copenhagen? No, we will not be in Copenhagen if you go by plane. The students will arrive at different times, and it is easy to find the train station: It is situated under the airport. All trains bound for Aalborg, Lindholm or Frederikshavn will stop at Hadsten station.
Q: Is the school far away from everything? Hadsten is a small town with about 7000 inhabitants. From the school there is 300 meters to the train station, and with the train you are 25 minutes away from Aarhus, which is the second largest city in Denmark. Citymap of Hadsten >>
Q: When shall I arrive? Shall I come the day before you start? No - We would like you to arrive on the exact date. The day before is not a good day, because there are no teachers at the school. The day after will be much better. If you have problems, please call or mail us.
Q: My father will bring me by car. Can he stay overnight? Of course he can! We will find a room for your fathers (and mothers!). Accommodations are DKK 225,- (EU 30,-) per day - and that includes 3 meals and betweens!
Q: Can I have visits when I attend the school. Yes, you can. The price of accommodations is the same. In both cases it is very important that you tell us you will be having guests, so that we know that they are not thieves!!!
Q: What should I bring? The list is long, but you will have to finish it yourself. Here are some ideas:
Bring Clothes Sports clothes A laptop computer if you have one (we do have basic computers and free Internet connection) Music and something to play it on! Things you just must have with you!
Don’t bring Towels Sheets for the bed (Sheets and towels will be provided for international students)
Q: How many students attend the school? All in all, we have 60 to 80 students. The folk high school is a very small unit, and everybody knows each other.
Q: Where will I live, eat & sleep? The school is a boarding school. You live, eat, sleep, learn, play and spend most of your leisure time at the folk high school. Together with the 60-80 other students you will experience something unique: It is not comparable to anything else, but you might think of it as a serious 4-5 month summer camp!
Q: Am I going to have my own room? No, you are going to share a room with another student. The room is not a fancy hotel room, but at most of the rooms, you will have your own bathroom. In the rest, the bathrooms are shared. You are going to live together with another international student – girls live with girls, boys with boys!
Q: How do we eat? Am I going to cook my own food? No, we have an excellent kitchen, and we serve 3 to 4 meals every day! Most students gain weight if they don’t look out! The food is part of the stay, which means that you are not going to pay extra for the food.
Q: Is the school religious or political, private or state-run? The school is a private school, and it has no direct connection to any organisation. It is non-political, non-religious and the key words for us are: dialogue & participation.
At Hadsten Folk High School, enlightenment of life has to do with reflecting, discussing and working with central matters of life, while you are in the middle of it. The perspectives are many: philosophical, pedagogical, political, historical, religious and concerning society.
Q: One of the demands is, that we participate in the everyday life at the school. How is that different from my school? A folk high school, which is not compatible to the high schools found in Anglo-Saxon countries, is a non-formal adult residential school offering learning opportunities in almost any subject including history, arts, music, sports, philosophy, theatre, photography etc. The folk high schools are part of a Danish tradition of popular education. The schools individually decide the content of the courses and there are no tests or exams.
The quality of the stay is to be found in the development of your personality and not in grades and diplomas. Therefore your participation is essential to both you and your fellow students, because if you fail to take part in the life at the school, both you and your friends there will miss the central thing – the folk high school life.
